About the Episode
We talked about the NFA process. Also we will try and sort through Pflugerville Independent School District, Hendrickson High School, Journalism, Gun Survey.
But first,
Sen. John Whitmire, a Democratic State Senator from Houston, has asked for an attorney general’s opinion on whether Texas’ new open carry law will allow for open carry on school campuses. The law, which takes effect on January 1st, 2016, may preclude school districts from banning openly carried firearms on the streets, walkways, parking lots or garages..
Sen. Whitmire’s letter to Attorney General Ken Paxton was made public on Thursday. The senator said that there was a way to interpret the law to where it does allow for firearms to be carried on certain parts of the premises.
This question, at this point, should be irrelevant. No matter what you think of the law, the time for editions and clarifications has passed. It passed when this bill went through the House, Senate, and all of the relevant committees involved.
Sen. Whitmire is right to ask for clarification, because our laws should be as clear as possible. But he should have done so when the Texas legislature was in session. He shouldn’t be stalling, and he shouldn’t be calling attention to the fact that he failed to ask this question when it mattered most.
Open carry will become legal at the beginning of next year, and it is unlikely that this law will undergo any changes. The time has long since passed…..Senator Whitmire it reminds me of a little song I once heard
