Now the 84th Legislature has come to a close. Some of our elected officials are patting themselves on the back for a job well done. I highly disagree these spineless cowards gave us a hot mess of legislation that will take 10 years to clean up. Not only are citizens going to be confused by the new laws, so are law enforcement officers. I have already heard from officers with the Austin Independent School District Police Department over their confusion and dislike of some of the laws. Well your job is to enforce the law and not write legislation. I will see you Jan 1, 2017.
So why are some law enforcement organizations confused and upset? Here is why. Starting Jan 1, 2016 you will be able to open carry and conceal carry a handgun with a handgun license. So if you are in possession of a concealed handgun license now you will be grandfathered and you do not need to take another class or get a different license. For a business to prevent you from carrying concealed they will need to post a 30.06 sign or give you verbal notice. To prevent you from open carrying they will need to post a 30.07 sign or give you verbal notice.
You will also be able to open carry on the streets, sidewalk, walkway, parking lot or parking garage of an Elementary, Middle or High School with a handgun license…..But our legislators were sooo focused on Universities and colleges they forgot that……But they did ban open carry of a handgun on Universities and College campuses including the streets, sidewalk, walkway, parking lot or parking garage. But you still can open carry an AR15 on a college campus and you don’t need a license. Are you confused? We are going to break this down with
