There are some provocative protests in the works of the newly minted Campus Carry Law at UT. Those opposed to the law have planned to carry dildos around campus – protesting students’ right to concealed carry a handgun with their own version of open carry…only with sex toys, not guns.
As it turns out, there are strict rules prohibiting certain kinds of expression on campus including any writing or visual image…that is obscene.” In short: you would get a citation for openly carrying a dildo around before you got a citation for carrying a gun under new Texas carry laws.
We aren’t without a sense of humor here on the show, and we have to admit that this protest is nothing if not witty. The protest misses the mark, however. As Mark Twain wrote: “humor is the good-natured side of truth.” Well, this protest seems to be all good nature, yet short on truth.
Case in point: Glocks, not cocks, will save your life.
This planned protest strikes me as totally irrelevant in light of the murder on campus earlier this week. The news of Haruka Weiser’s death seems sobering to me. We get wrapped up in debate about hypotheticals, policy and ideals when we debate the merits of campus carry, but this week reminds us that these decisions and these policies will have a real effect on campus safety. I won’t speak for Haruka or her family. All we can say is that our thoughts and prayers are with them now. Parents should never have to bury their children.
But the fact of the matter is this: it’s difficult to conjure up any scenario in which a dildo would’ve saved Haruka’s life. It’s too easy to see how a gun could’ve saved her life.
Even more sobering is that it looks as though APD got the right guy. The affidavit, which can be found online, reads as an open and shut case, with plenty of hard evidence and perhaps more to come. It’s a reminder that while UT is a fairly safe campus, having a lower crime rate than the national median, it is still higher than the Texas median. That is to say this: it is not perfect, and it never will be. I just hope and pray that law enforcement are not rushing to arrest the homeless guy that stole a bicycle and back pack. As always more guns equal less crime, go out and buy yourself a gun.
